Issues You May Have with a Partial Denture and How to Fix Them

Posted on

Partial dentures may have been the ideal answer for your dental issues. The problem is, over time, you may have started having some issues that you don't know how to fix. These issues may seem minor and may not even warrant a repair or office visit. Here are a few of those issues, how you can fix them, and if you should consider seeing a dental professional for assistance.

Staining Issues

An issue you may be experiencing, especially if you are a smoker or are a coffee drinker, are stains showing up on your partial dentures. You may be experiencing issues where whitening toothpaste isn't working, or where whitening treatments are not available to you because they may hurt your natural teeth. There are a few options available to you to fix this issue. You can use a diluted bleach solution to remove tough stains. It is recommended to use one part bleach to ten parts water. Remember to rinse your dentures thoroughly if you use this method. If this does not work, you can attempt a water softener soak which will help break up mineral deposits and make the stains easier to remove.

Loss of Shape

One problem you may be experiencing is a loss in shape. The dentures should remain moist, and if they are not kept moist for a long period of time, they may start to loose their shape and become brittle. This makes it easier for them to break and reshape. Ideally, this is an issue that should be taken to your dentist. However, if you can't get into see your dentist for several days or weeks, you can try reforming them by soaking them and rehydrating the dentures. This can allow you to reform them slightly until you can get in to see your dentist and have them professionally repaired.

Chips and Breaks

One of the most common issues you may have with your partials are cracks and breaks in the dentures themselves. If you have never experienced this issue, you may be inclined to panic if your dentist isn't available for an emergency repair, or if there are no emergency repair clinics near you. You can temporarily fix this issue by purchasing an over the counter repair kit. This kit can help fill in the cracks and breaks and help you get by until a clinic slot becomes available.

These are only a few of the issues you may have or may be experiencing. If there are other issues, contact your dentist as soon as possible.
