5 Products You Need To Protect Your Oral Health When You Have Dentures

Posted on

If you're getting full or partial dentures for the first time, you may be wondering what you need to take care of your dentures. You need products that help you keep your dentures clean, as well as your teeth and the rest of your mouth. To help you out, here is an overview of what you need and a few tips on using each product.

1. Denture adhesive

Denture adhesive holds removable dentures in place, but it can cause issues with comfort if you allow it to build up on your dentures or your teeth. When you remove your dentures for the day, make sure to fully remove the adhesive from your mouth. Otherwise, the adhesive can trap bacteria between it and your gums, creating an environment for cavities. You also need to ensure that you fully remove the adhesive from the dentures. If you don't, the dentures won't fit correctly and may damage your gums.

2. Denture cleanser

Denture cleanser can help to remove the adhesive from your dentures, and it can also remove built-up food and debris. However, it is not safe for your mouth. After cleaning your dentures, make sure to rinse them thoroughly. Also, never apply denture cleanser to the inside of your mouth or directly to any remaining teeth that you have.

3. Denture-soaking solution

Your dentures need to stay moist. This is similar to how your mouth has to stay moist to fight off germs and cavities. In your mouth, your dentures naturally stay moist, and every time you swallow, you re-moisten your mouth. If your dentures are out of your mouth, you can use a denture-soaking solution to keep them moist. However, this solution can also be harmful if ingested. Never put this solution in your mouth, and always rinse your dentures after using it.

4. Toothpaste

When you remove your dentures, you still need to clean your mouth. Even if you don't have any natural teeth left, you still need toothpaste. Every evening when you remove your dentures, use a toothbrush to clean your teeth and use toothpaste with a bit of gauze to clean the other parts of your mouth, such as your gums and tongue.

5. Mouth wash

Finally, you also need mouthwash. After meals, you should remove your dentures and rinse them with water. Then, you should rinse out your mouth with mouthwash. This gets rid of loose debris and helps to kill any bacteria in your mouth.
